Are You a Great Student?

A great student is one that comes to class dedicated to the goal of learning as much as possible during the time committed to that learning (this time could mean class time, or homework time).  A great student cares more about learning the concept than completing the assignment..

  • If you are a great student, you are setting your goals and aiming for your best success.  As you reach your goals, or as you realize that you are not reaching your goals in the time frame you have set, you are re-setting those goals and taking steps to be sure to reach them.
  • A great student sets goals high.  Perfection is not a worthy expectation, but it is the only reasonable target.  Setting your target on 100% will raise the expectation of your performance no matter where you stand in your level of achievement.  Your goal may be to obtain a "B" or a "C+", but if you set your target at 67% and miss by a little...you may end up on the low side and not reach your goal.  If you always set your target at 100% with your goal at some lesser point, you will more often reach your goal....and sooner.
  • If you don't consider yourself a great student...perhaps you should change some of your habits to conform to the habits listed above.

Ideas Leading to Easy Academic Success:

  1. Quit thinking that real learning is easy!  There is no secret!
  2. REAL learning is hard work.  It takes commitment.  It takes determination.  Your brain needs to see, pattern, and understand before the neuropathways become permanent.  This takes more than simple observation.
  3. If you can imagine a person who is a committed, determined, hard-working individual...what is in store for them in their future?
  4. Now, imagine a person who lacks commitment, lacks commitment to a goal, and doesn't work very hard...would you like to be this person?

  5. If you need to be entertained in order to learn...your hopes of independent learning are greatly diminished; mature learning is an impossibility unless you are excellent at entertaining yourself while you learn... smile
  6. MOST IMPORTANT:  ENGAGE the material.  Boring material becomes exponentially more interesting [and entertaining] if you know something about it.  NEVER blame someone else for your own lack of learning; it's YOUR brain to fill with what you think it wise to fill it with.
